Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. is a Missouri company founded in 1998, specializing in pure, natural, non-GMO Heirloom seeds for the home gardener. Why Heirloom? Heirloom seeds can trace their ancestry back hundreds, even thousands of years and breed true year-after-year, whereas hybrids will revert to type. The main argument for Heirlooms is that they just tast better.
Jere Gettle, the owner, is a leading proponent of the locavore movement, urging everyone to grow their own produce or buy from a local farmer. The economic and health benefits realized from native grown produce are enormous, providing local jobs and making sure our children get wholesome, nutritious food every day.
Bakersville, our authentic pioneer village, is the site of our annual Spring Planting Festival, with recent attendance topping 6,600 and growing every year. Look for this major Missouri event on the first Sunday and Monday of each year. There are ten other Heritage Day festivals on the first Sunday of every other month except December.
Our Village began with the original seed store where you can shop for over 1,300 varieties of seeds-plus, you can find books, CDs, tools, t-shirts, caps, and just about anything you'll need for your garden. Sometimes, we even have baby chicks!
We sell our seeds all over the world and donate seeds to worthy causes everywhere--$320,000 worth of donations in one recent year.
In 2009, we established our first out-of-state retail outlet-The Seed Bank of Petaluma, CA. In 2010, we bought Comstock, Ferre & Co., LLC in Wethersfield, CT, the oldest continuously operated seed company in the United States.
- Bulbs, Roots, Tubers
- Organic Supplier
Although we contract for seeds from about 50 producers in 70 countries, roughly 40% of our varieties are produced within Missouri or nearby states. We also grow and package a goodly number of the seeds here at Baker Creek. This past year, we enclosed our rows in high tunnels and introduced bumble bees to provide the purest possible pollination. Our 2011 catalog contains over 1,300 varieties--we try to add several varieties every year. We provide the tried-and-true varieties that are old favorites, but we also like to introduce folks to varieties they may not be familiar with, that would fit most home gardening programs.
We are not strictly speaking an organic seed provider--many of our small-farm sources cannot afford the certification process-but we test all GMO-susceptible varieties for GMO content and make sure we provide only pure, natural, non-GMO seeds. We are, however, in the first stages of a program to offer a limited number of organic seeds.
Bakersville, our authentic pioneer village is a booming tourist destination. There is no admission fee and you are free to wander around through the old-time buildings and view our exotic poultry and other animals. Don't miss the Seed Museum. Groups are welcome at any time. Give us a few days' notice and we can provide special presentations. Lunch is from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on a donations basis, Monday through Friday, in the Earth restaurant. Most Sundays, there are soup and sandwiches in the Baker's Flour Mill.
