Winemaking started as a hobby and developed into a commercial business. Charles McCullough came out of retirement and put his degree in Biology & Chemistry to work making wine. His wife, Anita, used her degree in Business Administration & Marketing to plan the strategy for successfully getting their products to their markets.
Although the winery is situated on a 239-acre farm (in Charles' former woodworking shop), there is no vineyard-yet. A vineyard is in the plans, but the McCulloughs have found it advantageous for them to import their grape juices from all over the world; that allows winemaking to occur year round. Additionally, world-class varietials can be obtained to make wines that cannot be made with the limited variety of grapes that grow well in Missouri. The winery makes Merlot from Italian grapes, Riesling with German grapes, Pinot Noir from New Zealand and a variety of other European and South American varieties. Additionally, a wide selection of fruit-flavored wines are included in their lineup.

Over 20 varieties of wine are produced by the McCullough House Winery; red wines, whites, blushes and a selection of fruit-flavored wines offer a wide choice to the customer. Visitors entering the property turn off state Highway 142 onto a mile-long winding private driveway through the forest, passing a historic Civil-War era homestead and log barn. The elegant tasting room can host at least a dozen at the bar, plus ample seating for a couple of dozen more in the comfortable lounge/dining area. The winery does not serve food, but guests may bring their own snacks. The tasting room is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 6:30 pm. Friday & Saturday nights are available for private wine tasting parties. Adjacent to the lounge is a large billards room guests may enjoy. A favorite attraction of the winery is the spacious karaoke theater where guests may display their vocal arts until closing time at midnight.
McCullough House Winery products are available at liquor package stores in Thayer, Lanton, West Plains, Mountain View, Willow Springs and Mountain Grove. They will soon be available in the Sprinfield/Branson area.
