About Us

The Green Acres’ aquaponics project is a partnership between the City of Kansas City, MO, the KCMO School District and other organizations. Green Acres was founded in 2010 by Carol Coe. Her mission was to educate the community on aquaponics as the future of food production. Her primary focus was the inner city, whose grocery stores often do not offer many healthy options.

Since 2010 the project utilizes campus greenhouses at East High School to launch an aquaponics program, an initiative that is providing fresh food to the community, education, and hands-on learning for students. Through common goals, partnerships, and innovative thinking, all involved in these efforts are chipping away at the problems of urban food deserts, compromised educational systems, crime, and a lack of jobs. This project feeds people nourishing foods, while nurturing their healthy nutritional requirements through a new connection to organic food, agriculture, hydroponics, and aquaponics. Green Acres develops indoor farming solutions to address urban agriculture challenges and provides donor-funded training.
